In light of the recent security scare we must change the way we think about make-up while traveling. Airlines and government security agencies will now not allow you to take with you or on your person any liquids or gels. This essentially means that women will no longer be allowed to carry make-up on board a flight and consequently make no touch-ups to your make-up while flying.

So what’s a glam girl to do? You certainly want to be safe traveling, yet still look good doing so.

According to the experts at the nation’s leading make-up school, Make-Up Designory (MUD), the best way to work around this situation is to consider the products you are using. “You should consider using longer-lasting cosmetics,” suggests Tate Holland, CEO and President of MUD. “Pigment-based or pigment-rich products will simply last longer. Look for strong color in your pressed powder products including eye-shadows and blushes. If your pressed product easily delivers strong amounts of color, they are more likely to last.”

MUD also offers the following tips for women travelers:

     Buy lipsticks that advertise longer wear or consider a product that delivers a light stain to the lips;

    For your mascara, look for a waterproof product – these tend to last longer;

    If foundation is important, use a richly pigmented cream foundation. Cream foundations do not break down like liquid or powder-based products. If cream foundations are new to you, you will want to experiment. A little product will go a long way.

    In addition, look for products that have a professional tradition. Products that have been developed by professional make-up artists for the entertainment and fashion industries are designed to last longer.

In terms of packing your make-up, make it easier for yourself and security officials by properly packing all of your cosmetics and other personal liquid care products in clear plastic bags. “The first bag should contain the same products that you originally used to apply your make-up including any applicators such as sponges and brushes,” continues Mr. Holland. “Place this bag in a pocket on the exterior of your luggage so that upon arrival you can easily access the cosmetics for a touch-up. The rest of your cosmetics should be placed together in a second bag.”

Next, place shampoos and lotions in a third bag. These last two bags should be placed in your checked luggage at the top of your clothes so that security officials can easily inspect these items without having to dig though your suitcase.

Going for a Christmas party, a new year party or a birthday party? How are you going to do your makeup?

A look at the models on the catwalks of some of the more flamboyant fashion shows reminds one of a cross between Tinkerbell and Xena, the warrior princess. You know, Amazonian height but with fairy makeup.

Now that is a look which is perfect for parties. All you need is shimmer makeup.

A point to note. Anyone above forty should avoid all out shimmer as while the shine highlights facial features, it also draws attention to existing fine lines and wrinkles. If you are young and your face is line-free, fantasy makeup is the way to go.

Makeup Style #1. Fantasy Makeup.

For that ethereal look, get a shimmery eye shadow or a shimmer powder in silver, gold, bronze, or any flattering color that captures your fancy. You would also need a brilliant lip gloss to go over your lipstick.

Wear a lipstick that you like, which flatters you. Then go over it with the shimmery gloss. Add some shimmer powder or gold or silver flecks to the center of your lip to emphasize your pout.

For the eyes, how far dare you go?

You can apply metallic eyeshadow over your entire eyelid for a real head turning look.

Or you could use a more neutral shade like peach, brown or lilac, but highlight the inner corner of the eye by lining it with a silver or gold eye pencil.

Then lash out with black mascara.

If you like, you could even attach crystals to your eye lashes, with false lash glue. Or you could use a metallic mascara for gorgeous, magical lashes.

Finally, take a large powder brush and lightly dust shimmer powder over your cheekbones, your forehead, nose and chin.

Makeup Style #2. Dramatic Eye Makeup

Do you want Egyptian makeup or smoky eye makeup?

Both feature dramatic eyes.

However, strong eyes and strong lips would clash, so keep your look classy by going for nude lips.

For starters, do you want to use false lashes as well?

If you want really dramatic lashes, start off by trimming false lashes to fit your eyes and applying them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Or you could just use 3 coats of mascara instead when you are done.

With a makeup brush, put on the eyeshadow over the entire eyelid. For the Egyptian look, you can go for a medium shade of eye shadow, but use liquid black liner to draw a thick line on the upper lash line. Thicken the line as you move towards and beyond the outer corner of the eye. Line the lower lash line with an eye pencil if you find the liquid liner too tricky.

For smoky eyes, go for a deeper eyeshadow like charcoal, plum, midnight blue, deep green.. you get the picture. Apply the shadow over the entire eye lid. Then line upper and lower lashes with a black eye pencil and smudge the line. Finally, apply mascara.

Pick a nude shade for the lipstick or use a light lip gloss so that your lips do not compete with your eyes.

If you want goth makeup, leave your cheeks pale. If not, then use a blusher to contour your face or for radiance.

Makeup Style #3. Luscious lips.

If your lips are sensuous, or anything remotely like Angelina Jolie’s, then focus on your lips.

For your eyes, apply a peach or nude brown shadow and a single coat of mascara.

Then choose a strong red lipstick, or a deep wine shade for your lips.

Use a lip pencil to line the lips. The use a lip brush to fill in your lips with your chosen lipstick. Use some blusher to add color to your cheeks and you are done.

These tips assume that you already have a great base to work with. Meaning, start off with foundation over your face for a great canvas.

We invest in expensive makeup, we read up on how to perfectly apply it, and we take the time every morning to put it on with perfect precision. We do this, so that we can cover up those fine lines and wrinkles without looking like we’re wearing makeup. We do this so that we can achieve that perfect moist and dewy look without our skin looking oily. So that we can add that subtle, yet vibrant boost of color to our eyes, making them stand out, and so that we can achieve those perfect lips- plump and pouty without being too whorish looking.

And isn’t it disappointing when you dedicate all that time to achieve the seemingly impossible, only to have your makeup slide off your face a few hours later?!!

Well ladies, keep reading, because below I’ve included some fabulous makeup tricks on how to get long lasting makeup -so that it stay on all day long or all evening out!

Let’s start with the very basics – moisturizer. Its important to properly hydrate your skin before applying makeup,as your makeup needs something to stick to (for those of you with oily skin, it’s best to use an oil free moisturizer). You do not want to apply your makeup right after, as you need to provide your skin with enough time to properly absorb the moisture, otherwise your makeup will simply slide right off. Therefore, it’s best to wait 10 – 20 minutes first.

The next step is to apply a makeup primer. Primers provide a clean ‘base’ to your makeup and absorb excess oils, providing your makeup with long lasting power. They also have built in moisturizing power, so unless your skin is particularly dry, you can actually use a primer in place of a moisturizer. Some of the popular ones include NARS makeup primer (which has the added benefit of built in SPF 20), Smashbox photo finish foundation primer, or Naked Minerals Neroli setting mist- which is actually sprayed on after makeup application, rather than before, and provides you with a radiant glow.

After the primer, apply a liquid foundation. Oil based foundations tend to provide better coverage than the oil free ones, however they also slide off more quickly. So unless you really need the heavy coverage, opt for an oil-free foundation. I find that the “mousse” consistency foundations also stay on quite well, like Biotherm.

To ensure that your foundation is set in place, dust a light layer of loose powder on top. This helps “seal” in your makeup and blot any excess oils that may develop,providing your makeup with long lasting power.

If you have really oily skin, you might want to try carrying around oil blotting pads (clean and clear makes excellent cheap ones). By blotting up excessive oil throughout the day, you’ll help stop your makeup from “sliding off” your face, keeping it in place, where it belongs!

Next choose a blush. Your best option is cheek stain, it stays on the longest. Cheek stain can provide some pretty powerful color though, and it can also be a bit difficult to spread. In which case the next great alternative is a powder based blush, as those tend to stay on much longer than cream blushes. If you choose to use bronzer instead of brush, also go for the powder version over any of the creamy or liquid options.

After applying blush, head up toward the eyes. For eye shadow that stays on all day long, try prepping your lids first with an eye primer – like Benefit cosmetics FY eye, or moisturizer, and then dab on a light layer of foundation to follow. Wait for it set and then apply your eyeshadow. This should make it last double as long!

If you use eyeliner, although eye pencil will provide you with a slightly more natural look, liquid eyeliner will stay on the longest.

When applying mascara, opt for a waterproof one – you never know when you might feel the need to cry, or when it may just start raining. Make sure to apply multiple coats for thicker lashes and la long lasting stay.

And finally, your lips. Avoid using lip-balm right before applying lip color- it makes your makeup slide right off. Apply lip pencil all around the edges and then color in the insides with pencil too. Dab on a drop of foundation to fill in the cracks, and then brush on loose powder to set. Proceed to apply your lipstick as usual.

Matte lipsticks are preferred.While they may be drying, they tend to stay on much longer then their “moisture providing” counterparts. If you’re looking a “wet” finish, you might want to apply a layer of sheer gloss on top.

And now you’re finished – so relax and enjoy! There are a million things you have to worry about or remember throughout the day, but reapplying your makeup is simply not one of them!
